In researching and writing my book, and in my ongoing work at IBM, I noticed that more and more people are exploring virtual worlds, which can expand the ways we can interact and communicate, well beyond the traditional business languages. There are new experiences in the 3-D virtual world that can change the way we live, create relationships, learn new things and drive business. This is a new environment limited only by imagination!
This new virtual world in Second Life, for example, is entirely built and owned by its residents - people like me who establish online identities, build communities, create virtual places & communicate the new business languages!

Some analysts are seeing / calling the metaverse as the future of commerce. We can do things in Second Life that are difficult in traditional media... things like attend a virtual event or meeting; see and touch technology; and receive information in a very visually, interactive, life-like way. Come check it out.
IBM has recently jumped into Second Life, including a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Hub where you can have a great experience, learn a lot about SOA and have tons of fun.
If you check it out, here are my suggestions and tips:
-
Take the guided tour which drives you around and explains the IT trends, the key benefits of SOA, the SOA Entry Points: People, Information, Process, Reuse and Connectivity. There is also a place called What is SOA? Watch the amazing videos!
-
Put on a virtual IBM SOA tee shirt and strange sunglasses.
-
Enjoy a cup of java in the People Cafeteria, where you can even play the piano!
-
Take a copy of the Monitor Telescope in the Process Art Gallery.
-
Download real SOA product code and brochures at the Information Library.
-
Get information about thousands of Reuse applications included in the Business Catalog.
-
Don't forget to fly the SOA Hoverboard - pick it up at the Connectivity Teleport Center.
-
Be my guest and come join me for some fun and learning in the SOA Hub. See you there!
